What kind of anesthesia will be used? What kind of anesthesia will be used? Calf implant surgery in my office is completed under general anesthesia. Patients are completely asleep during the surgery and remember little or nothing of the experience. I have extensive experience with local anesthesia and I feel this is not a kind way to do calf implant surgery even when intravenous sedation is added. How is calf implant surgery done? Calf implant surgery can be separated into four parts. First, a plan is outlined on the patient's calf. Second, a small incision is made behind the knee so that the subsequent scar is inconspicuous. Next, the calf tissue and muscle fascia are lifted away from the calf muscle and the implant is placed. Finally, absorbable stitches are placed to close the incision in the skin. How long will I be in the operating room ? Surgery takes about one hour to complete. You will spend about four to five hours in my office. Frequently, other surgery is combined with calf implant surgery increasing the time to complete the operation(s). For safety reasons, I limit the maximum time for surgery on each patient to six hours on a given day.
