What do I do if I feel or see lumps in the skin? What do I do if I feel or see lumps in the skin? During the first six to twelve hours, lumps in the injection site(s) can be smoothed with massage. Lubricate the skin (cold cream, Vaseline, or mineral oil) and either massage them between your two fingers or massage them against the underlying bone until the lump has passed. Most patients experience little or no pain. Ice packs and/or cool moist packs help with any discomfort. When can I shower after collagen injections? You may shower immediately after collagen injections. Gently wash any treated areas as you would your normal skin. How long does it take to heal? Skin healing takes two days after injections. Many times there is no healing period at all. Makeup can be applied immediately after injections. You can usually return to work immediately after collagen injections. When do I come back to the office for aftercare? Your aftercare visits are your next treatment appointment. There are no charges for these office visits. You are welcome to be seen in my office anytime you have questions or concerns about your injections. When can I suntan after collagen injections? Sun tanning damages your skin. It leads to wrinkling, discoloration, and superficial growths. It can also lead to serious skin cancer. For these reasons, I recommend that you use sun block with an SPF number of 15 or greater at all times. A physical broad-spectrum sun block works best. If you are exposed to the sun, I recommend that you protect treated areas for six weeks with clothing such as a hat. Better yet, stay in the shade where it's cooler! How long will the results last? The results will last only six to nine months. This is the result of normal absorption of the collagen. To maintain the best result, it is important that you avoid sun exposure and continue with a good skin care program.
