What kind of anesthesia will be used?

Most ear surgery in my office is completed under local anesthesia. This sometimes is supplemented with oral or intravenous sedation. Rarely is general anesthesia necessary. You have the choice.

How is ear surgery done?

Ear surgery can be separated into four parts. First, a plan is outlined on the patient's ear. Second, the incisions are placed on the back surface of the ear so that they are very inconspicuous. Next, the underlying ear cartilage is weakened and reshaped with permanent stitches. The earlobes can also be reduced. Finally, absorbable stitches are placed to close the incisions in the skin.

How long will I be in the operating room?

The length of time it takes to complete ear surgery is about one to two hours. Frequently, other surgery is combined with ear surgery increasing the time to complete the operation(s). For safety reasons, I limit the maximum time for surgery on each patient to six hours on a given day.
