How much will it hurt? Most patients experience little or no pain. Intensive treatments may lead to tingling or a light burning sensation that is easily controlled with acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil). Ice packs and/or cool moist packs also help with any discomfort. When can I shower after advanced skin care? You may shower immediately after advanced skin care. Gently wash any treated areas as you would your normal skin. When do I come back to the office for aftercare? Your aftercare is attended to during your next treatment appointment. Please call if you have any questions about your advanced skin care treatment or your home care program. You may also be seen in my office anytime you have questions or concerns about your treatments. There are no charges for these phone calls or office visits. How long does it take to heal? Skin healing takes two to four days after intensive treatments. Many times there is no healing period at all. Usually there is little or no skin redness. When it does occur, it passes after twelve to twenty-four hours. This can easily be covered with makeup. Rarely, hydrocortisone cream is prescribed to hasten skin recovery. Usually you can return to work immediately after advanced skin care. After intensive treatments, you might want to take a long weekend to allow the peeling process to resolve. When can I suntan after treatments? Sun tanning damages your skin. It leads to wrinkling, discoloration, and superficial growths. It can also lead to serious skin cancer. For these reasons, I recommend that you use sun block with an SPF number of 15 or greater at all times. A physical broad-spectrum sun block works best. If you are exposed to the sun, I recommend that you protect treated areas for six weeks with clothing such as a hat, T-shirt, or pareo. Better yet, stay in the shade where it's cooler! How long will the results last? The results are usually long lasting (i.e. one to two years) provided a monthly maintenance program is followed. Sun exposure and aging will reduce the longevity of the results. To maintain the best result, it is important that you avoid sun exposure, continue with the personalized home skin care program, and continue with monthly advanced skin care treatments.
