What kind of anesthesia will be used? What kind of anesthesia will be used? Most gynecomastia surgery in my office is completed under general anesthesia. Patients are completely asleep during gynecomastia surgery and remember little or nothing of the experience. I have extensive experience with local anesthesia and I feel this is not a kind way to do gynecomastia surgery even when intravenous sedation is added. How is breast enlargement done? Gynecomastia surgery can be separated into four parts. First, a plan is outlined on the patient's skin. Second, small incisions are placed so that the subsequent scars will be inconspicuous. Next, medicated fluid is placed in the fat and tissue to be removed. The fat is then carefully removed using special thin (three to four millimeters) instruments called cannulas. If there is persistence of firm tissue beneath the nipple, then an incision is made around the nipple and this breast tissue is removed. Finally, absorbable stitches are placed to close the incision in the skin and foam pad dressings are placed. How long will I be in the operating room? The length of time it takes to complete a surgery will be one to two hours. You will spend about four to five hours in my office. Frequently, other surgery is combined with gynecomastia surgery increasing the time to complete the operation(s). For safety reasons, I limit the maximum time for surgery on each patient to six hours on a given day.
