Do you need to shave my head? No. Only a narrow strip of hair needs to be clipped before surgery. Most of this scalp will be excised and used for grafting. Once your hair is washed after surgery any remaining clipped scalp can be covered with the remaining adjacent hair. What kind of anesthesia will be used? Most hair restoration surgery in my office is completed under local anesthesia with oral sedation (pills). Patients are comfortable during the surgery and remember little or nothing of the experience. It can also be completed under local anesthesia that is supplemented with intravenous sedation. You have the choice. How is a hair restoration done? Hair restoration can be separated into four parts. First, a plan is outlined on the patient's scalp and forehead. Second, hair follicles are harvested placing the incision in the hair-bearing scalp (donor site). Next, absorbable stitches are placed to close the incision in the scalp. Finally, graft sites are prepared and the micrografts and minigrafts are placed followed by a light dressing. How long will I be in the operating room? The length of time it takes to complete hair restoration is about four to eight hours. This depends on how many follicular units (hairs) are grafted. You will spend most of the day in my office. For safety reasons, I limit the maximum time for hair restoration surgery to eight hours per session.
