How do I prepare for this surgery? How do I prepare for this surgery? Skin preparation is very important prior to laser treatments. This takes six to eight weeks. Topical hydroquinone (Melanex) and sun block are used to reduce the risk of changes in skin color. What kind of anesthesia will be used? Most laser treatments of pigmented skin lesions in my office are completed under local anesthesia. It can also be done without any anesthesia. You have the choice. How is a laser treatment done? Laser treatments vaporize the pigment in colored skin lesions. A colored light laser is used. The mark(s) is treated once every four to six weeks until sufficient lightening is observed. Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) is then placed on the skin and covered with plastic film or cool moist packs. How long will I be in the treatment room? The length of time it takes to complete laser treatments is about thirty minutes. You will spend about an hour in my office or the hospital.
